A paradise in every way

The Balearic Islands are a special destination for many reasons. Its beaches, coves and landscapes are appreciated worldwide, have a great cultural and historical wealth and hide some virgin and natural places that leave you breathless.

The Balearic archipelago has it all: mountains, sea, cosmopolitan cities and rural villages. To all this we must add a powerful gastronomy, with recipes from centuries ago that continue to be made with top quality materials from the different islands. Although the four main islands of the archipelago share some dishes, each of them also has its own products and cuisine. In this sense, these are Menorcan typical dishes you cannot miss out during your visit to the island.

Lobster stew: it is probably the most typical dish on the island and, although you can eat a delicious stew anywhere in Menorca, it is said that the best area to do it is Fornells. A simple dish that is prepared in a clay pot and is made with a sauce made with vegetables grown on the island's orchards (pepper, onion, garlic...) and lobster or other types of shellfish or fish. All this accompanied by a couple of bread slices that cannot be missing.

Mahón cheese: the good quality of the sausages and cheeses of the Balearic Islands is undeniable. On Menorca island, Mahón cheese stands out, a cheese with designation of origin made with cow's milk, from uncooked pressed paste. A delight with an intense flavour for breakfast, snack or eat at any time of the day.

Oliaigua: This is a dish made only with the best quality produce from local gardens, making it an ideal option for vegetarians and vegans. The protagonists of this dish are tomato, onion, green pepper, garlic and, of course, oil. It is a typical soup of the island that peasants ate centuries ago for breakfast, but nowadays, it is eaten at any time of the day, especially during lunch.

Perol Menorquín: finally, Perol Menorquín is another traditional dish prepared in a clay pot, and which admits many variations. The most traditional and simple recipe consists of superimposed layers of sliced potatoes and tomatoes covered with garlic, parsley and breadcrumbs, between which meat or fish can be placed, although it can also be eaten alone with vegetables. Once all the ingredients have been placed, a gratin is prepared in the oven.

These are just some essential dishes of Menorcan gastronomy, although the truth is that the gastronomy of the island encompasses much more.
